Crown Chakra | Presence, Peace & Your Spiritual Connection
Barbara HudakShare
The Crown Chakra, known in Sanskrit as Sahasrara, meaning "thousand-petaled," is the seventh and highest energy center of the body. Located at the very top of the head, it governs your connection to something greater than yourself, to universal consciousness, to the divine, to the vast, luminous field of awareness that underlies all of existence. It's the seat of presence, peace, and the kind of knowing that transcends thought entirely.
If the lower chakras ask Am I safe? Can I feel? Who am I? Can I love? Can I speak my truth? What do I truly see?, the Crown Chakra rests in a question that dissolves all other questions: What am I, beyond all of this? This is the territory of mystical experience, of deep meditation, of the moments when the boundary between self and world becomes permeable, and something vast and peaceful shines through.
The Developmental Psychology of the Crown Chakra
The Crown Chakra's themes map onto the final stages of Erik Erikson's psychosocial development model: Generativity vs. Stagnation and Integrity vs. Despair, the developmental tasks of midlife and elder years. At these stages, a person turns toward questions of meaning, legacy, and the larger arc of a life. They're grappling with what truly matters, what they've contributed, and how to face the reality of impermanence with grace rather than fear.
Psychologist Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs is also deeply relevant here. At the apex of his pyramid sits self-actualization, and beyond it, in his later work, self-transcendence: the experience of moving beyond the individual self into something larger. Maslow described peak experiences, moments of profound awe, unity, and meaning, as among the most important experiences a human being can have. The Crown Chakra is the energetic home of those experiences.
Neuroscientist Andrew Newberg's research on the neuroscience of spiritual experience has documented the measurable brain changes that occur during deep meditation and mystical states: decreased activity in the parietal lobe (the region associated with the sense of a separate self), increased activity in the frontal lobe (associated with focused attention and positive emotion), and a profound sense of unity, peace, and expanded awareness. These aren't merely subjective experiences. They're documented neurological events. The Crown Chakra is the energetic map of what the brain can access when it's deeply still.
Signs Your Crown Chakra May Be Out of Balance
An underactive Crown Chakra may show up as a sense of spiritual disconnection, meaninglessness, cynicism, rigid materialism, or a persistent feeling of being cut off from something larger than yourself. An overactive Crown Chakra may manifest as spiritual bypassing, using spiritual practice to avoid rather than integrate the lessons of the lower chakras, or a disconnection from the body, practical life, and earthly relationships.
Both patterns reflect the same underlying longing: to feel held by something larger than the individual self, to rest in the knowledge that you're not alone, and to experience the peace that comes from being fully, presently alive.
The Energetic Tradition
In the yogic tradition, the Crown Chakra is associated with pure consciousness, the color violet or white, and the sound of silence, or the primordial sound OM. It governs the pineal gland, the cerebral cortex, and the entire nervous system. Its gifts include presence, peace, wisdom, unity consciousness, and the direct experience of the sacred, whatever form that takes for you.
The thousand petals of Sahasrara represent the infinite facets of consciousness itself. When this chakra's open and flowing, you experience life not as a series of problems to be solved, but as a mystery to be inhabited. You feel held by something larger than your personal story. You can be with what is, including difficulty, uncertainty, and impermanence, without being destroyed by it. This is the fruit of a fully integrated chakra system: not escape from life, but a deeper, more luminous presence within it.
Our Crown Chakra Blend | Lavender, Sacred Frankincense, Myrrh & Sandalwood
Our Crown Chakra Essential Oil Roll-On is handcrafted in Sedona, Arizona with a sacred, timeless blend drawn from the most revered oils in the world's spiritual and healing traditions, chosen to quiet the mind, open the crown, and support the experience of deep presence and connection:
- Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): the most universally beloved of all essential oils; lavender calms the nervous system, quiets mental chatter, and creates the felt sense of safety and ease that allows the Crown to open. It's the perfect foundation for this blend, grounding the sacred in the body and ensuring that spiritual experience is integrated rather than dissociated.
- Sacred Frankincense (Boswellia sacra): the most revered oil in the world's spiritual traditions; Sacred Frankincense has been used for thousands of years in prayer, meditation, and ceremony across cultures from ancient Egypt to the Christian tradition to Ayurvedic medicine. It deepens and slows the breath, quiets the analytical mind, and creates a felt sense of sacred space, within and around you. Research has identified its psychoactive compounds as genuinely mood-altering and anxiety-reducing.
- Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha): ancient, resinous, and deeply grounding; myrrh has been used alongside frankincense in sacred traditions for millennia. Where frankincense opens and elevates, myrrh grounds and anchors, ensuring that Crown Chakra experiences are integrated into the body and the earth. It's associated with wisdom, acceptance, and the graceful meeting of impermanence.
- Sandalwood (Santalum album): one of the oldest and most sacred oils in the Ayurvedic tradition; sandalwood quiets the mind, supports deep meditation, and creates a quality of inner stillness that's both alert and at rest. Its warm, woody scent is immediately centering, and research supports its significant calming effects on the nervous system.
All blended in organic coconut oil and infused with a Herkimer "diamond" quartz crystal and 24K gold flakes to amplify the intention of each application.
How to Work with Your Crown Chakra Roll-On
- Create sacred space. Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Dim the lights if possible. Sit comfortably with your spine long and your hands resting open in your lap, a gesture of receptivity.
- Apply the oil. Roll gently onto the crown of the head, the temples, or the inner wrists. You may also apply to the back of the neck and the soles of the feet, connecting crown to root, heaven to earth.
- Breathe and surrender. Inhale the sacred, resinous scent deeply. With each inhale, imagine a soft violet or white light gathering at the top of your head, expanding upward and outward like a lotus opening. With each exhale, release any effort, any agenda, any need to be anywhere other than exactly here.
-
Set your intention, or release all intention. You might silently affirm:
I am connected. I am held. I am part of something vast and loving. I rest in the peace of my own being.
Or simply sit in silence, without any words at all. - Rest in presence. The Crown Chakra doesn't respond to effort. It responds to surrender. After applying the oil, simply sit. Breathe. Notice. Allow whatever arises to arise and pass without grasping or resistance. Even five minutes of this quality of presence is deeply nourishing to this center.
Practices That Support Crown Chakra Balance
- Silent meditation: particularly open awareness or non-dual practices
- Yoga poses that bring energy to the crown: Headstand (Sirsasana), Rabbit Pose, Lotus, Savasana
- Time in nature, particularly under open sky, in high places, or in the presence of ancient trees
- Contemplative prayer, chanting, or any practice that connects you to something larger than yourself
- Fasting, simplifying, or creating periods of intentional stillness and silence
- Gratitude practice: the felt sense of gratitude is one of the most reliable doorways to Crown Chakra states
