Solar Plexus Chakra | Confidence, Power & Your Inner Fire

Barbara Hudak

The Solar Plexus Chakra, known in Sanskrit as Manipura, meaning "city of jewels," is the third energy center of the body. Located between the navel and the sternum, it's the seat of your personal power, self-worth, and the capacity to act with intention in the world. It governs your relationship with confidence, discipline, and the felt sense that you have the right and the ability to shape your own life.

If the Root Chakra asks Am I safe? and the Sacral Chakra asks Can I feel and create?, the Solar Plexus asks Who am I? Do I trust myself? Can I act? These questions sit at the heart of self-esteem, motivation, and the courage to move from intention into action.

The Developmental Psychology of the Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra's themes map onto the third stage of Erik Erikson's psychosocial development model: Initiative vs. Guilt, which unfolds roughly between ages 3 and 6. During this window, a child is discovering their capacity to initiate, to plan, and to assert themselves in the world. They're learning that their actions have consequences and that they can be the author of their experience.

When this stage is navigated with encouragement and appropriate guidance, the child develops a healthy sense of initiative, the psychological foundation of confidence, self-direction, and the willingness to take up space. When it's met with excessive criticism, ridicule, or punishment for assertiveness, the child learns to associate action with guilt or shame. That pattern can show up later as chronic self-doubt, perfectionism, difficulty making decisions, or a persistent sense of not being "enough."

Psychologist Albert Bandura's research on self-efficacy, the belief in one's own capacity to succeed, is deeply relevant here. Bandura found that self-efficacy is one of the strongest predictors of motivation, resilience, and achievement. It's not a  fixed trait - it can be cultivated through experience, practice, and the right internal environment. The Solar Plexus Chakra is the energetic home of self-efficacy.

Somatic researcher Peter Levine notes that the solar plexus region, the gut, the diaphragm, the core, is one of the primary sites where the body holds unresolved stress and unexpressed action impulses. When we feel powerless or overwhelmed, that experience is often felt as a tightening or collapse in the belly. Practices that support the Solar Plexus Chakra, including breathwork, core movement, and aromatherapy, help restore the felt sense of agency and inner strength.

Signs Your Solar Plexus Chakra May Be Out of Balance

An underactive Solar Plexus Chakra may show up as low self-esteem, indecisiveness, chronic procrastination, difficulty setting boundaries, people-pleasing, or a pervasive sense of powerlessness. An overactive Solar Plexus Chakra may manifest as controlling behavior, aggression, arrogance, workaholism, or an excessive need to dominate situations and relationships.

Both patterns reflect the same underlying need: to trust yourself, to act from your own center, and to know that your presence and your choices matter.

The Energetic Tradition

In the yogic tradition, the Solar Plexus Chakra is associated with the fire element, the color yellow, and the seed sound RAM. It governs the digestive system, the liver, the pancreas, and the adrenal glands. Its gifts include willpower, self-discipline, clarity of purpose, healthy boundaries, and the radiant confidence that comes from knowing who you are and acting in alignment with that knowing.

The Solar Plexus is often described as the "inner sun," the source of your personal radiance. When this center is open and balanced, you move through the world with a quiet, grounded confidence. You can say "yes" and "no" with equal ease. You take action without needing external validation. You trust the fire within you.

Our Solar Plexus Chakra Blend | Vanilla, Lemon, Lime & Eucalyptus Radiata

Our Solar Plexus Chakra Essential Oil Roll-On is handcrafted in Sedona, Arizona with a bright, warming blend chosen to ignite confidence, clarity, and the felt sense of personal power:

  • Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia): warm, grounding, and deeply comforting; vanilla has been shown to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of ease and self-assurance. Its sweetness softens the inner critic and creates a felt sense of safety within the self, the foundation from which true confidence grows.
  • Lemon (Citrus limon): clarifying, uplifting, and mentally activating; lemon essential oil is one of the most well-researched oils for supporting mood, focus, and cognitive clarity. It cuts through mental fog and supports the clear-headed decisiveness that's the hallmark of a balanced Solar Plexus.
  • Lime (Citrus aurantifolia): bright, energizing, and invigorating; lime amplifies the citrus brightness of lemon with an added spark of vitality and forward momentum. It supports motivation and the willingness to take action.
  • Eucalyptus Radiata (Eucalyptus radiata): opening, clarifying, and expansive; eucalyptus supports deep, full breathing, and breath is one of the most direct pathways to the Solar Plexus. When we breathe fully into the belly and diaphragm, we activate the body's own sense of power and presence. Eucalyptus Radiata is gentler than other eucalyptus varieties, making it ideal for emotional and energetic work.

All blended in organic coconut oil and infused with a Herkimer "diamond" quartz crystal and 24K gold flakes to amplify the intention of each application.

How to Work with Your Solar Plexus Chakra Roll-On

  1. Stand tall. If possible, stand with your feet hip-width apart, spine long, shoulders back. Feel the ground beneath your feet (your Root) and the aliveness in your belly (your Solar Plexus). Take three full, deep breaths into your belly.
  2. Apply the oil. Roll onto the solar plexus area (between the navel and sternum), the inner wrists, or the upper abdomen. You may also apply to the pulse points and inhale directly from your wrists.
  3. Breathe and expand. Inhale the bright, warm citrus-eucalyptus scent. With each inhale, imagine a golden sun expanding in your core, warm, radiant, and steady. With each exhale, release any contraction, doubt, or held tension in the belly.
  4. Set your intention. You might silently affirm:
I am capable. I am worthy. I trust myself to act, to choose, and to lead my own life with clarity and courage.
  5. Take one action. The Solar Plexus responds to doing. After your practice, identify one small, concrete action you can take today in the direction of something that matters to you. The act of following through, however small, builds the energetic muscle of this center.

Practices That Support Solar Plexus Chakra Balance

  • Core-strengthening yoga poses: Boat Pose (Navasana), Warrior III, Plank, Twists
  • Breathwork focused on the belly: Kapalabhati (breath of fire), diaphragmatic breathing
  • Journaling prompts that explore self-worth, boundaries, and what you truly want
  • Setting and honoring one boundary per day, with yourself or others
  • Spending time in sunlight; the Solar Plexus is the fire chakra and responds to warmth and light
  • Completing tasks you've been avoiding; each completion builds self-efficacy
